Gainesville Adoptions Attorneys
The laws governing the adoption process in Georgia are complex. If you are considering adoption, it is important to hire a family law attorney who focuses on adoption to help guide you through the process.
At Coleman, Chambers & Rogers, LLP, in Gainesville, our family law attorneys are here to assist you in intrastate (within Georgia) and interstate (two states) adoption. Our firm’s family law efforts are led by attorney Susan D. Brown. She and attorney Bob Coleman, bring over 70 combined years of experience and give each client undivided attention in the pursuit of growing their families.
Handling Intrastate And Interstate Adoptions
If your case involves an interstate adoption, it is essential to work with an attorney who has experience in this area. Our adoption lawyers are familiar with Georgia adoption laws, as well as how the Interstate Compact on the Placement of Children (ICPC) impacts interstate adoptions. Our attorneys have worked through ICPC in conjunction with juvenile court and adoption matters.
We handle a full range of adoptions, including:
- DFACS adoptions: A DFACS adoption is one that involves a child in foster care through the Georgia Department of Family and Children Services (DFACS). These adoptions are approved by the Department, and can sometimes involve adoption subsidies.
- Private agency adoptions: Private agency adoptions are cases in which placement has been made through an adoption agency, within the State of Georgia or in another state. Adoption agencies must complete home studies and placement reviews. If the child is born outside the State of Georgia, additional approval is required by Interstate authorities.
- Stepparent adoptions: Georgia offers stepparents the ability to adopt their spouse’s children when either the other parent agrees to give up their parental rights, or there are conditions which justify termination of parental rights.
- Relative adoptions: Relative adoptions are limited to close relatives, and can be by agreement, or in situations where termination of parental rights is appropriate.
- Third-party adoptions can be a friend, acquaintance or arranged by mutual acquaintances. These adoptions are generally subject to scrutiny and require a home study prior to placement of a child.
- International adoptions are either finalized in the foreign country or custody of the child is given to the prospective adoptive parents in the other county. Specific rules govern each type of adoption and can affect a child’s immigration and citizenship status.
- Adult adoptions are when the “child” to be adopted is over the age of 18. Usually these are children who were raised by a relative or stepparent and want to make the relationship formal.
No matter what your adoption situation, our team at Coleman, Chambers & Rogers, LLP, has the resources and insight to help you achieve success.
